Imports of food grains decrease in July-Oct

WASHINGTON: Imports of food grains marginally decreased in the first four months of the current fiscal year 2015-16 (FY16) from the same period of FY15.

According to Bangladesh Food Situation Report, prepared by the Ministry of Food & Disaster Management, imports of rice and wheat amounted at 1.360 million tonnes in the July-October period of current year. The quantity of imported food was 1.365 million tonnes in the same period of last year.

Domestic procurement of food grains also declined marginally to 1.06 million tonnes in the period under review from 1.07 million tonnes in July-October of 2014. Food stock also dropped to 1.42 million tonnes in the first four months of FY16 from 1.65 million tonnes in the same period of FY15.

Total import of food grains in FY15 was 5.27 million tonnes while the quantity was 3 million tonnes in FY14. Stock of food grains (including transit stock) with the government was 1.28 million tonnes at the end of June, 2015.
