NEW DELHI: The mobile gaming market in India is estimated to be worth $150 million as game developers sharpen their focus on smartphones, said a new report by lobby group Nasscom on Friday.
While 96% of developers in India are working on the mobile platform, 75% of Indian game developers are eyeing the global market and not just India, which has a considerably small smartphone user base.
Smartphone installation base will reach 200 million by the end of 2015, and is projected to grow by 100 million each year, according to the report. Approximately 40-50 million people play games on their smartphones and feature phones, and the number is growing at 40-50% year-on-year.
“The gaming industry has changed dramatically in the last five years and now includes over 200 games development studios and service providers,” the report said. “The advent of self-publishing, investment and crowdfunding, has led to a new breed of agile indie developers, whose focus is on mobile and PC (personal computer) social games.”
The number of game developers and gaming service providers has doubled in the past three years.
“More than half of Indian game developers and service providers were established from 2012 onwards and the industry follows a lean structure, with 57% of companies having less than 10 employees,” the report said.
