KOCHI: Indian Oil Corportion’s (IOC) LPG business division, Indane, has embarked on creating a rural customer base for which LPG imports are likely to touch 16 mt by 2022 from 9mt at present. IOC has started creating import infrastructure for backing its rural initiative, IOC chairman and managing director B Ashok said on the sidelines of a programme commemorating 50 years of Indane.
“Indane would focus on creating a rural customer base since growth possibilities in the metro cities have already saturated and growth in tier-II and tier-III cities were near saturation. LPG has even reached the BPL category in urban areas, but there was scope in the rural market for which IOC was preparing for a drive,” Ashok said. He said while the company has already firmed plans of creating a network for rural distributers, it was trying to find the right modality.
Ashok also said the proposed Paradip-Durgapur LPG pipeline will be ready by the next year to boost supplies. “IOC is setting up two LPG import terminals at Kochi and Paradip ports. The Paradip to Durgapur stretch of the pipeline will be ready by the next year,” he said. The IOC chief said that after the pipeline construction is over, it is expected that there would be no backlog in supplies.
