AMRITSAR: Customs officials seized over 2 kg gold valued at Rs 57.18 lakh from a washroom of Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International airport.
Assistant commissioner (customs) Jasmeet Singh said during a routine checking of the airport premises, customs officials found two packets hidden in one of the washrooms at the airport. The white tissue paper packets were sealed with adhesive tape.
He said when the packets were opened, two rectangular gold bars, weighing 1 kg each, were found. Also, 158 grams of gold pieces were recovered from the packets. The customs officials put the worth of the gold recovered at around Rs 57.18 lakh.
He said the seizure was made under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, on the “reasonable belief that the gold was improperly and illegally imported into India, hence it was liable to be confiscated”.
The officials said no arrests had been made so far, but investigations were being conducted.
