NEW DELHI: Customs Department seized 3kgs gold being allegedly smuggled into the country by a passenger travelling in Air Arabia’s Sharjah-Nagpur flight.
A press release issued by the department said the man was carrying a little over 3kgs gold valued at Rs74 lakh concealed in a music system. The detained person admitted having made an attempt to smuggle the gold for a consideration, claims the customs’ press release.
However, the person’s name was not divulged. It is learnt from sources related to the action that the person has been identified as Mohammed Motorwala. It is learnt the 30-year old passenger is originally from Mumbai and was on a mission to deliver the consignment in Nagpur. The gold was smuggled in wire form which was wound into transformer of the sound system being brought in by Motorwala. Customs officials grew suspicious due to the unusually heavy music system. When they opened it, hey literally struck gold, said a source. The gold was wrapped under a tape.
