KERALA: In India, 194.6 million are undernourished, according to the India Food Banking Network. But, more people in the tourist hotspot Kerala are becoming obese.
To curb the new trend, Kerala is implementing a 14.5% tax “fat tax” on burgers, pizzas, tacos, doughnuts, sandwiches and pasta sold at branded restaurants and food retail giants, according to India’s International Business Times.
“There has been an alarming trend in the growth of unhealthy eating habits among Keralites and we hope the fat tax will be a deterrent,” Rajan N. Khobragade, commissioner of commercial taxes
