PALAKKAD: Gold weighing about two kg was seized from a Kozhikode-bound passenger at Palakkad Junction Railway Station by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) after a dramatic sequence of events.

The passenger, who was later handed over to the local police, has been identified as Muhammed Yasir, a resident of Kozhikode. The events began at around 6 a.m. when Chennai-Mangalore Mail reached Palakkad Junction.

When Yasir went out of his compartment to buy a bottle of water from the platform, three others in the same compartment attempted to steal his bag and ran away. Yasir went outside the train after keeping the bag on his seat. Noticing the three, RPF personnel on duty chased them and seized the stolen bag. They also took the three in custody.

When the RPF opened the bag, it contained one tri-pod and one selfie stick. On suspicion, they broke them open and examined. The officials found gold inside both the items.

When interrogated, Yasir said he was given the tri-pod and selfie stick by a man in Kolkata to hand them over to another man in Kozhikode. However, he maintained that he was unaware of the gold hidden inside. Yasir said he was returning from Kolkata after buying materials for his business needs.

The three persons who stole the bag have been identified as Muhammed Iqbal, Rasheed and Arafat from Kasaragod. The case would be handed over to the Enforcement Directorate.
