India shows 13% increase in mobile billing, mobile internet users to surge 213m till June 2015

NEW DELHI: Average monthly mobile bill per user in India has increased by 13% in last year to Rs 439 across India egged by a significant proportion spent on mobile Internet.

About 45% of the total bill amount was being spent last year on mobile internet which increased to 54% this year, according to a report titled ‘Mobile Internet in India 2014’, released by the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International on Tuesday at the India Digital Summit.

Compared to last year, the average monthly spend on mobile Internet went up by 36% to reach Rs 235. “It is evident from the data that usage of mobile internet has gone up amongst the users from the previous year,” said Subho Ray, President IAMAI.

The report also found that majority (63%) of the India’s mobile Internet users spend between Rs 101 and Rs 500 monthly on their mobile connection. About one-fourth users spend between Rs 501 to Rs 1000.

The total number of mobile internet users in India is expected to reach 213 million by June 2015, according to the report. There were 173 million mobile internet users in India in December, 2014.

The report found that mobile Internet users in rural India is set to grow at a rate of 33% from October 2014 to reach 49 million by March 2015. The number is expected to 53 million users by June 2015.

Urban India however, will continue to account for a large percentage of the Mobile Internet users across the country and is expected to reach 143 million by March 2015 and 160 million by June 2015.

More than half of the Mobile Internet users last year spent more than Rs 100 but less than or equal to Rs 500 in availing the mobile Internet services. About 33% of the mobile Internet users avail rental plans with limited downloads, followed by 21% who subscribe to unlimited rental plans.

The report data revealed that 26% of the non-working women access rental mobile Internet plans which allow unlimited access to Internet. Similar plans are availed by one-fifth of college going students and Working women.

Nearly one-fourth of the School going kids and one-fifth of the non-working women use mobile Internet on Pay per Site basis.
