NEW DELHI: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today conducted a surprise inspection at the Customs office here, from where 15 kg of gold was found stolen recently, police said.
Though the purpose of the inspection was not known, it came days after CBI took over the investigation into the gold theft case from the local police.
The gold worth Rs five crore, seized by customs personnel, had been kept in a safe vault in the customs office for production in court and found stolen earlier this week following which two customs officials were suspended.
Police sources said the case had been withdrawn from the Cantoment Police and handed over to CBI as the theft had taken place in the premises of a central government office and the quantum of gold stolen was huge.
CBI officials also raided the Customs office at the airport here.
Meanwhile, officials of Air Intelligence wing of customs seized 951 gm of gold being smuggled by a Sri Lankan woman who arrived at the airport here late last night, officials said.
The woman, who brought the gold by hiding it in her body, had been arrested, police said.
