NEW DELHI: Thirtyfour people were arrested today by the customs in connection with the seizure of electronic goods at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) earlier on Saturday. The arrested peoples were produced before the Barasat court which granted bail to 32 on bond while two were remanded to judicial custody till May 15. Six peoples are in the custody of the DRI, it was learnt.
According to customs sources, investigations regarding the 20 others are on and the necessary papers regarding the valuation of the goods bought by them are being made. About 800 gms of gold was also seised from one of the persons.All the goods are in the custody of the customs at the airport.
Acting on an intelligence tip off, DRI officials intercepted six passengers who had arrived by a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok in the wee hours of Saturday. A search of their baggage revealed electronic goods like iPhones,laptops, memory cards and watches valued at Rs 2.2 ( two point two) cores in addition to 800 gms of gold valued at Rs 80 lakhs. During questioning of the six, DRD officials came to know the names of 54 others on the same flight. The arrival lounge was cordoned off by the DRD officials and a search revealed more electronic goods in the baggage of these passengers. Customs officials says that the total value of the seized goods will be known only after calculating each and every item.
