NEW DELHI: A man has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth Rs.2.84 crore at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here.
The accused was intercepted on Monday by customs officials after his arrival from Singapore. “During his personal check, officials recovered 10 kgs of gold concealed in special cavities made in shoes worn by him,” said Vinayak Azaad, Additional Commissioner of the Customs at IGIA.
The passenger has been arrested, Azaad said, adding that it is one of the biggest seizures of gold from an individual in the recent past. The value of the seized gold is assessed to be Rs.2.84 crore, as per the prevailing market rate.
