NEW DELHI: India Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of airport customs foiled an attempt of gold and diamonds smuggling and seized 4 kilograms of gold and 145 carats of diamonds valued at Rs10 million and arrested a flight crew member.
AIU customs officer told that the Jet Airways flight crew member, Abdul Khatri, was helping a smuggler and they intercepted him at the airport and recovered 4 kg of gold worth Rs9 million and 145 carats of diamonds worth Rs1 million.
They arrested Khatri and he told the officials that a passenger had handed him the gold on the flight. The AIU caught Mohammed Afzal, who was waiting at the airport to collect the consignment. Both the accused were remanded in judicial custody.
Khatri admitted that in the past he had helped the smugglers eight times.
In another case on Friday, the AIU arrested two passengers, Sagar Dave and Rasiklal, and recovered gold worth Rs 7 million from them.
The accused were holding Madagascar passports and had arrived from Kenya. The AIU officers recovered 3 kg of gold bars with them.
