Indian Customs seizes gold worth Rs2.1m at airport

NEW DELHI: The Air Intelligence Unit, Air Customs, at the Cochin International Airport, Nedumbassery, seized four pieces of rhodium-coated gold wires weighing 709.500 gm from a passenger who arrived here by Indigo flight on Monday.

The Air Intelligence Unit officers intercepted the passenger at the exit gate of the arrival hall of the airport when he attempted to smuggle out the rhodium-coated gold wires, which were concealed as metal beading of his checked-in trolley bag.

The officers seized the gold wires valued at Rs2.1 million under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962, said Biju Thomas, Deputy Commissioner of Customs.

A probe has been launched into the incident after arresting the passenger. Assistant Commissioners K P Sivadas and T M Mohammed Faiez, Customs Superintendents K P Ajithkumar, Joseph Mathew, K G Sreekumar and Inspectors O F Jose, G K Pandey and Deepak Kumar were part of the team which made the seizure.
