NEW DELHI: A man was arrested from the New Delhi railway station after a joint operation by Delhi police and a team of Delhi government’s drug control department. Around 61 boxes of oxytocin injections worth Rs 13 lakh were seized.
On Saturday, the drug control department team got a tip off about the consignment on a Patna-Delhi train.
“A trap was laid and the accused, Devinder Kumar, a resident of Ghaziabad, was held, His luggage was checked and 61 cartons of oxytocin injections, worth around Rs 13 lakh were seized,
“. A ticket of the train he was travelling in, from Patna to Delhi, was also recovered from him,” said a senior official.
Devinder could not produce licence or any purchase documents for the medicine. Oxytocin injection, which causes harmful effects on humans as well as livestock, is allegedly used to extract milk from milch animals. It is also used to advance hormonal growth, the official said.
“During interrogation Kumar told police that he used to procure the injection from Patna and used to sell it to dealers here. Investigations are underway to identify the buyers and other dealers who had been working with Kumar on this. Some have been identified and will be arrested soon,” said a senior police official.
A case was registered at New Delhi railway station under sections of Drug and Cosmetic Act, 1940. tnnUnder the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, oxytocin is a Schedule-H drug and is required to be supplied on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner only. The formulation of oxytocin injection is required to be packed in single unit blister packet to avoid its misuse.
Officials from the drugs control department have seized the consignment for lab testing.
