ALLAHABAD: The Ghoorpur police on Sunday claimed to have busted an inter-state racket involved in liquor smuggling and seized 20 cartons of beers and two of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs 90,000. Key racketeer, identified as Luvkush Yadav of Chitrakoot, too was arrested near Jasran vegetable market.
Cops also sized the jeep used to smuggle the consignment brought from neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.
Ghoorpur station officer Mahendra Kumar Verma said, “Liquor and beer consignment was smuggled during night hours to evade police actions. Smugglers earn a profit of 30% per carton.” He further said that smugglers had a wide network and had even set up small godowns.
In the past six months, police have seized liquor worth Rs 10 lakh smuggled from MP and Haryana.
Recently, UP and MP police officials had met in Allahabad to check liquor smugglers and decided to set up barricades at static locations on the border.
