MEERUT: As the state gears up for the Panchayat polls, smuggling of illicit liquor to woo voters is going on in full swing. And this is keeping excise department officials on their toes. On Thursday, in a joint operation with Shamli police, excise sleuths seized 389 cartons of Haryana-made illicit liquor worth Rs 17 lakh. The police have arrested Vinod, resident of Hardoi district, and Sunil of Kandhala in this regard.
The truck was seized at Panjitha crossing. The police found 389 cartons of Kindom whiskey, which is restricted for sale in Arunachal Pradesh only.
Officials claimed that illicit liquor containing methyl alcohol is being smuggled from Haryana, which could prove fatal if consumed.
