NEW DELHI: For the 19th year, the Souderton Independent is the media sponsor of the Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Business Expo. This is the last of three articles highlighting different aspects of the expo the Independent will run leading up to the Oct. 6 event.

Defense and teamwork are key to “Sporting Success,” the theme of the 2015 Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Expo on Oct. 6, and these traits are reflected in scheduled presentations on cybersecurity and mentoring across generations in the workplace.

Seminars have been a piece of the expo for only a couple years now, according to chamber marketing committee Chairwoman Michelle Kane, but have become one of the expo’s strengths, particularly considering the pair scheduled for this year.

The talks have been a highlight for Steven Hunsberger, executive director of the Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce, who said he had enjoyed them as an attendee before being hired to his current position over the summer.

“Ever since they have had seminars, I have always attended. I have always attended as a participant and always found them very beneficial,” Hunsberger said. “I always came away with some nugget of great information.”

The first presentation at 2 p.m. will be a panel discussion titled “Mentoring in the Workplace from Boomers to Z,” according to Hunsberger.

Souderton Area High School business teacher Maria Halteman will be on the panel and said she will be joined by her daughter, Victoria, who is president of the school’s Future Business Leaders of America. They, along with representatives of other generations, will speak about the issues they have seen and take questions from the audience on understanding and working with people of different ages.

“I think each generation has its own perspective,” Halteman said. “Just like we all learn differently, we all work differently, so [the discussion] is a way to bridge the gap and bring out different generation’s strong points and what they can bring to the workforce.”

Halteman said she did not know if there was an official tie to the theme of “Sporting Success … Join the Winning Team” but said she sees a natural connection between the Expo theme and a discussion on helping generations connect.

“You’re all going to be working together, the different generations, and how do you bring together all your strengths and weaknesses and make a solid working team,” Halteman said.
