CHENNAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence ((DRI) at Chennai international airport seized foreign currency worth over `65 lakh from a courier leaving for Singapore.
The courier was identified as Thameem Ansari Yasar Arafat, of Triplicane, who was caught at the boarding gate. He had stuffed Euros, US dollars, Saudi riyals and Singapore dollars, worth `65 lakhs, in the secret chambers created at the top and bottom of his checked in suitcases which weighed unusually heavy.
The arrested person was not a regular courier but was believed to be a part of a hawala gang.
