CHENNAI: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 25kg of amphetamine, a psychotropic drug, from a house at Kannadasan Nagar near Vyasarpadi here the other day.
Two persons were arrested in this connection.The seized drug was valued at Rs 50 lakh.
DRI sources said they had received specific information that a gang was trying to smuggle the drug from Chennai to Malaysia by air. The authorities conducted a surprise check at a house in Kannadasan Nagar.
They saw two men — identified as Kasali (36) and Mohammed Ismail (38) — stuffing the drug in hollow tubes. On being questioned, the men told them that they first were stuffing the drug in the tubes. They said the tubes would be embedded at the bottom of the handbags once it was stuffed.
The smugglers adopted ingenious method to smuggle the drug, the DRI sources said. Once the drug reaches its destination, the value of it drug will be around Rs 2 crore.
Amphetamine is a ‘reward’ drug. It will elevate the mode and prevent sleep by keeping a person awake for several hours. It is an addiction causing drug, which will also thin a person down. It has multi-various hazardous side effects.
Many students use this drug to study without a sleep, and it is also used in rave parties. Regular consumption of this drug would lead to sleep deprivation followed by anxiety disorder.
Only under extreme cases the neurologists prescribe this drug, researchers said.
