NEW DELHI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), on Monday, detained Shahabaz, one of the main accused in the notorious gold smuggling case reported from the Karipur International Airport in 2013, who was absconding for more than a year. DRI officials said the Koduvally native was arrested under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSE).
The accused had been absconding after securing bail from the court.
DRI team took the man into custody from the Beach Fire Station area in the city at around 7.30 p.m.on Monday. He tried to attack two DRI squad members who suffered minor injuries in the incident. A senior officer attached to the DRI told The Hindu that the accused would be handed over to the police for completing further legal procedures. It was on November 8, 2013 that the incident leading to the arrest of Shahabaz happened.
