JAKARTA: An Indonesian court has sentenced two men to death on charges of smuggling the largest shipment of methamphetamine confiscated in the country so far.
The National Narcotics Agency in January found more than 862 kilograms (1,900 pounds) of meth worth about 1.6 trillion rupiah ($116.8 million) in a car in western Jakarta and arrested nine people.
Two of them, Wong Chi Ping, a Hong Kong citizen and alleged syndicate leader, and Indonesian ship captain Ahmad Salim Wijaya, were tried separately and convicted and sentenced Friday at the West Jakarta District Court.
The three other Hong Kong citizens, three Indonesians and one Malaysian were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 years to life.
Indonesia has extremely strict drug laws with more than 140 people on death row.
