JAKARTA: Two Taiwanese nationals were arrested at the international airport in Jakarta, Indonesia in mid-March after they were found trying to smuggle nearly 4 kilograms of amphetamine into that country, Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said Wednesday.

The bureau said the arrests were the result of cooperation between Taiwanese and Indonesian police, who discovered a total of 3,776 grams of amphetamine that were tied on the legs of the two young men, both at their 20s, during customs checks at the airport on March 13.

The two men, one surnamed Lai and the other Huang, flew from Taiwan to Jakarta that day, the CIB said.

It had informed Indonesian police of possible drug smuggling by travelers from Taiwan earlier that day based on information that a drug ring was recruiting young people with lucrative cash awards to travel in and out of Taiwan with drugs, the bureau said.
