International community recognises Pakistan’s steps to boost exports: LCCI

LAHORE: Pakistan’s measures to further strengthen its export controls are well recognised by the international community. The country has an effective export control law relating to export of sensitive goods, technologies, material and equipment.

This was stated by the Director General of Strategic Export Control Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and head of a four-member team, Dr Zafar Ali while speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI). LCCI Vice President Nasir Saeed, Executive Committee Members Mian Rehman Aziz Chan, Amjad Ali Jawa and Waqar Ahmed Mian also spoke on the occasion.

Dr. Zafar Ali said that Pakistan’s export control policy addressed both tangible and intangible export or sale and transportation of sensitive goods and technologies. He said that Pakistan had already framed out Export Control legislation in the year 2000 and implemented in the year 2004 after legislation on this law in the Parliament.

Speaking on the occasion LCCI Vice President Nasir Saeed appreciated the initiative to brief the LCCI members about the laws and regulations related to implementation of internal compliance program for nuclear and biological weapons and their Delivery System Act 2004.

He said that in defence sector, the private sector has very marginal involvement. At present, the defence sector is only controlled by strategic and public sector enterprises. It is a fact that the local sector is working with low technology and has limited access to defence sector.

How private sector can be engaged in production of defence related items, he questioned and said that it is high time that certain operations should be transferred to private sector so that through knowledge sharing and capacity building, the employment generation could be made possible.
