Investigation into Vehicles Amnesty Scheme in doldrums

KARACHI: Investigation into Vehicles Amnesty Scheme (VAS) scam is in doldrums, as the committee which is investigating the matter has not yet completed its report.

Sources informed Customs Today that the investigation authority i.e. Additional Collector Irfan Javed had conducted the Customs officials who were deployed at the Car Group (Group-VII) at that time.

The sources further informed that the departmental representative of MCC-Appraisement (West) Muhammad Naeem Khan has handed over all relevant documents regarding the case to the committee, adding that the last set of related informative documents has been sent to the committee head on May 6.

To a query, the sources revealed that the committee will reach the conclusion till the mid of the current month.

Appraising the cause of delay into the inquiry report, the sources said that the departmental representative and alleged Customs officials did not submit the relevant information timely.

It is pertinent to mention here that the inquiry which was recommended by the FTO into dubious clearance of 432vehciles under amnesty scheme in the month of January-2015.

Subsequently, the authorities concerned of Model Customs Collectorate-MCC Appraisement (West) has served show-cause notice to 37 clearing agents and MCC-Preventive has served show-cause notice to 13shipping agents in this regard.
