NEW YORK: Apple has been one of the leading Smartphone makers in its industry. And most of the time, when we think of its closest competition, the Korean-based company Samsung comes to mind. However, one phone, Motorola’s Moto X 2014 model, is said to be closely competitive to the American giant’s most recent handset, Apple IPhone 6.
Externally, the iPhone 6 looks sleek with its aluminum unibody and rounded edges while Moto X’s design is a plastic build covered with metal strips on its edge. Its back adds a more personal touch with different materials which can be placed at the back cover such as leather, wood, and bamboo. From afar, however, both phones look somewhat alike.
Moto X is slightly bigger with 5.2 inch 1080 x 1920 AMOLED screen compared to Apple’s 4.7 inch at 750 x 1334 IPS LCD display. Apple’s IPS LCD display enables production of more realistic colors versus Moto X’s vibrant but somewhat unrealistic pictures. Nonetheless, despite Apple’s Retina Display of 326 ppi shows less fine details compared to Moto X’s 423 ppi.
In terms of camera, IPhones are known to be quite competitive in terms of the quality of portraits it produces, with it being even better in the iPhone 6 series as it upgraded the already good shots from iPhone 5S models. Moto X, however, are just upgraded specs from its average original Moto X series.
In terms of output, iPhone 6 has a new time lapse movie feature which is good for shooting videos, as well as more improved moving night shots owed to its upgraded auto-focus feature. Nonetheless, Moto X produces 13 megapixels at 4128×3096 pixel resolution versus iPhone’s 8 megapixels at 3264×3096 pixel resolution. Moto X also gives the option of choosing better image through its feature of taking its own shots before the “take” button is pressed. Although good improvements from Motorola, iPhone ultimately takes better shots possibly attributed to the optical image stabilization technology present in the Apple phone.
Hardware-wise, Moto X boasts a Snapdragon 801 chipset with Krai 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU at 2.5 Ghz while IPhone 6 has A8 chipset with PowerVR GX5450 GPU and 1.4 GHz. Both specs are competitive but the Apple phone is faster. In terms of RAM, however, Moto X has 2 GB while iPhone only has 1 GB. Both phones have no memory slot for expansion for external storage.
Cost-wise, it is no surprise that iPhone is more expensive at $199 for the 16GB phone compared to Moto X which is priced at $99, attributed to the better specs and reputation of Apple phones.
