FRESNO:  While many college students catch grief for being glued to their smartphones, a California student says he owes his life to his iPhone.

The Fresno State graduate student was walking to his apartment Monday night when a man walked up to him and grabbed his computer bag, according to KSEE News. When the student resisted, the man pulled out a gun, shot him in the leg and made off with the computer bag.

Soon after the student’s roommate, Faris Alotaibi, heard a knock on the door.

“He was shocked and sweating,” Alotaibi told KSEE. “He said, ‘I got mugged, and the person who mugged me shot me in the leg.'”

When the theft victim and his roommate assessed the leg, they realized there was no blood — and no wound.

“The jeans were torn open,” he said. “He showed me his iPhone, and I saw the bullet was really clear on it. It saved his life.”

The bullet went through the protective case and shattered the iPhone, but didn’t injure the victim’s body.

The man packed his things and moved out the next morning, according to KSEE. He doesn’t plan to return to school.

The armed man who attacked the student hasn’t been caught.
