Cupertino-based Apple saw sales of its iPhone models rising at a faster pace than smartphones produced by Samsung, according to a report released Friday. iPhone shipments rose 21 percent during the third quarter of this year compared with the July-through-September quarter of 2014, reported Gartner, which tracks the technology market.
Shipments of Samsung smartphones rose 15 percent in the third quarter, Gartner reported. Despite the hotter pace of shipments of the iPhone, Samsung remains the dominant player in the smartphone market. Samsung shipments totaled 83.6 million in the third quarter of this year, while iPhone shipments totaled 46 million.
Apple dominated the premium segment of the smartphone market with its relatively new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models, Gartner reported.
The global launch of the new iPhone models in late September, along with the simultaneous launch in China, added to its overall sales during the quarter, Gartner said in the report. Worldwide, smartphone sales rose 15.5 percent and totaled 352.8 million units. Sales of low-cost smartphones in emerging markets fueled the shipments.
