TEHRAN: Transit cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan is expected to increase as the first phase of a new customs terminal at Poldasht border crossing has been inaugurated, Iranian envoy to Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic said.

“The new terminal at Poldasht border crossing will play a key role in boosting trade ties as well as transit cooperation between Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province and Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic,” Iran’s Consul General to Nakhchivan Mansour Airom told Trend.

Governor-General of Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province Qorbanali Sa’adat, Chairman of Nakhchivan Supreme Assembly Vasif Talibov, and Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pak Ayeen attended the inauguration ceremony of the new terminal in Poldasht border-crossing on May 4.

According to Mansour Airom, the project for constructing the terminal was launched in 2012 and 250 billion rials (about $8.2 million, according to the official rate on May 5) was spent on the project.

The new terminal is expected to pave the way for booming transit cooperation between the neighboring countries as the capacity of the terminal will increase in the future after introducing new customs procedures, the envoy added.

Meanwhile officials from Iran and Nakhchivan are studying a plan for creating a new transit route, Poldasht-Nakhchivan-Sadarak Road, connecting Iran to Turkey through Nakhchivan, Mansour Airom said.

Airom further explained that Iran gives priority for expansion of economic, trade and tourism ties between West Azerbaijan Province and Nakhchivan.
