TEHRAN: Iran said that it has for the first time in a decade been able to export 7 million barrels of oil in a single day from a southern terminal.
The country said the historic export had taken place by the simultaneous activation of 8 docks at Kharg terminal on April 15, 2015.
Pirouz Mousavi, the managing director of the Iranian Oil Terminals Company (IOTC), said the previous record stood at 6 million barrels in a single day.
“This came as many countries had previously expressed doubts on whether Iran would be able to handle major oil export volumes,” Mousavi said, as reported by IRNA.
He further said the increased export capability that has now become materialized is the result of renovating the infrastructure at Kharg terminal.
Mousavi had earlier said in February that a one-year project to overhaul Kharg facilities had increased the terminal’s export capacity. The project, he had said, had cost the country millions of dollars.
Kharg terminal is located in the Persian Gulf of Kharg. It is the main loading point for exports of Iran’s crude oil.
The terminal had an offloading capacity of as much as 14 million barrels per day (bpd) before the 1980-88 Iraqi imposed war on Iran. It became the target of frequent attacks by the Iraqi forces during the war and its export capacity accordingly was reduced drastically. After a series of post-war reconstruction projects, the offloading capacity of Kharg reached around 6 million bpd in 2007.
