TEHRAN: Iran’s agricultural exports rose by 27 percent in previous Iranian calendar year compared to its preceding year, according to the Iranian Deputy Agriculture Minister, Abdolmehdi Bakhshandeh.
The country exported $6.6 billion of agricultural products in Iranian calendar year 1393 (March 2014-March 2015), a 27 percent rise year on year.
Meanwhile, agricultural imports amounted to $12 billion, a 9 percent fall compared to its preceding year.
Some 10 trillion rials (about $300 million based on the free market exchange rate) has been earmarked for expanding modern irrigation networks and building dams across the country.
According to the official, modern irrigation systems are currently used over 170,000 hectares area of farmlands.
Iranian Agriculture Minister, Mahmoud Hojjati, said that by producing over 90 million tons of agricultural products per year, Iran is among ten top countries in the world.
The official said that attracting capital needed for the development of the agriculture sector is a priority of Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture, and that the government has provided all infrastructures to support foreign investment in this sector.
Iran is ranked the first worldwide for producing saffron, pomegranates, and pistachios, the second for producing dates and apricots, the third for producing figs and cherries, and the fourth for producing walnuts and apples.
