DUBLIN: Revenue has collected €48.7 million in unpaid tax and penalties from 235 medical consultants who set up private companies to increase their income.
The Irish Hospital Consultants Association has asked Revenue to publish new tax guidance for doctors after concerns were raised by the investigation and the commissioner is now examining how all professional practices could be avoiding tax.
The report by the comptroller and auditor-general (C&AG) into the revenue commissioner’s review of medical consultants’ tax affairs said that the doctors involved, mainly in Dublin, had been avoiding huge amounts of tax under the scheme.
