MADRID: Spanish police have arrested an Irishman they say was planning to sell more than 1,500 counterfeit football tops online for a profit of €75,000.

The 37-year-old was held in the Costa Blanca resort of Torrevieja after officers confiscated the Chinese-made sportswear at Alicante Airport.

Officers acted after detecting a tiny difference in one of the club shields on the shirts which didn’t match the standard design.

“Detectives believe the man arrested was planning to sell the garments online because there was no sign of business activity at his property.

“He could have sold the counterfeit clothes to buyers in his country, Spain or the UK for a profit of around €75,000 because he had acquired them at a very low price.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard confirmed: “The Civil Guard has arrested a 37-year-old man in Torrevieja as the suspected author of an intellectual property offence.
