TALLAHASSEE: The Port of Jacksonville in Florida hopes to spend $684 million for dredging to create a deeper port in anticipation of more and larger cargo ships.
Dredging will deepen the St. Johns River from 40 feet to 47 feet to accommodate super-sized cargo ships.
To transport the additional cargo, the Port of Jacksonville also wants to build a new rail line — which could cost up to $217 million — from the port to the city to facilitate cargo movement.
