TOKYO: Japan, the second largest consumer of rare earths after China, is still concerned about its dependence on imports Chinese imports. However, while several companies have abandoned their attempts to change this trade situation, others are focusing more closely on recycling to secure supply.
Japan represented approximately 18% of worldwide rare earth imports in 2014 by volume, Nabeel Mancheri, a research fellow at the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo, told delegates attending the Argus Rare Earths 2015 conference in Shanghai.
