Japan grants Rs 205m for face recognition system at airports

ISLAMABAD: Japanese government would provide 200 million Yen, equivalent to Rs 205 million to install advanced Facial Recognition System at airport for security improvement in Pakistan.

The Face Recognition System is a computer application capable of identifying or verifying an individual from a digital image of human face, captured by video cameras. According to an official document of the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, Takashi Kurai and Secretary Economic Affairs Division, Tariq Bajwa have signed documents of Japanese grant aid for installation of this advanced system.

In addition to this project, Japan has been assisting Pakistan through implementation of various projects in the field of security.

It said, X-ray scanning devices have been installed a three international airport including Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad and similar projects are now underway at Karachi and Bin Qasim International Ports.

Last year, Japan handed over 123 Japanese Hybrid Vehicles to the Ministry of Interior and National Highway Police for patrolling.

Moreover, in collaboration with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Pakistan, the four-year project on strengthening border management and illegal drug control has also started this year.
