TOKYO: Japanese Defense Ministry sources say the Maritime Self-Defense Force found a possible breach of international sanctions against North Korea.
They say P3C patrol aircraft spotted 2 tankers, one registered in North Korea and the other Dominican-registered. They were side by side in open waters in the East China Sea early on Saturday morning.
The North Korean tanker is believed to be a vessel on the sanctions list compiled by the United Nations. The sources say the tanker sailed toward the Korean Peninsula. The UN Security Council last month adopted a resolution that would significantly cut exports of oil products to North Korea. The sanction came in response to the country’s nuclear and missile development.
The sources say the ministry filmed the 2 vessels and contacted the US military over the matter.
