TOKYO: Japan stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Railway & Bus, Marine Transport and Paper & Pulp sectors led shares higher. At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 added 1.08%. The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Showa Denko K.K. (T:4004), which rose 9.23% or 161.0 points to trade at 1905.0 at the close. Meanwhile, Yamato Holdings Co., Ltd. (T:9064) added 5.61% or 129.0 points to end at 2430.0 and Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. (T:5706) was up 5.11% or 18.0 points to 370.5 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were NTT Docomo, Inc. (T:9437), which fell 2.14% or 56.5 points to trade at 2580.0 at the close. Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp (T:9432) declined 1.57% or 76.0 points to end at 4778.0 and KDDI Corp. (T:9433) was down 1.55% or 45.5 points to 2893.5. Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 2492 to 589 and 271 ended unchanged. The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was down 16.96% to 16.79 a new 1-month low. Crude oil for June delivery was up 0.16% or 0.08 to $49.31 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in July rose 0.13% or 0.07 to hit $52.20 a barrel, while the June Gold Futures contract fell 0.45% or 5.75 to trade at $1271.75 a troy ounce. USD/JPY was up 0.55% to 110.37, while EUR/JPY rose 0.75% to 120.18. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.03% at 98.88.
