Japan stocks higher at end of session, Nikkei 225 ascends 1.57%

TOKYO: Japan stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Power, Transportation Equipment and Fishery sectors led shares higher.

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 rose 1.57%.

The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Nichirei Corp. (TOKYO:2871), which rose 5.35% or 47.0 points to trade at 926.0 at the close. Meanwhile, West Japan Railway Co. (TOKYO:9021) added 5.32% or 428.0 points to end at 8475.0 and Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. (TOKYO:3099) was up 4.95% or 103.0 points to 2185.0 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were JGC Corp. (TOKYO:1963), which fell 2.33% or 53.0 points to trade at 2225.0 at the close. Eisai Co., Ltd. (TOKYO:4523) declined 2.32% or 193.0 points to end at 8130.0 and Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (TOKYO:4183) was down 2.07% or 9.0 points to 425.0.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 1727 to 155.

Shares in Nichirei Corp. (TOKYO:2871) rose to all time highs; rising 5.35% or 47.0 to 926.0. Shares in JGC Corp. (TOKYO:1963) fell to 3-years lows; down 2.33% or 53.0 to 2225.0. Shares in West Japan Railway Co. (TOKYO:9021) rose to all time highs; up 5.32% or 428.0 to 8475.0.

The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was down 10.15% to 22.12.

Crude oil for August delivery was down 2.06% or 1.08 to $51.66 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in September fell 2.33% or 1.38 to hit $57.62 a barrel, while the August Gold contract rose 0.22% or 2.50 to trade at $1160.40 a troy ounce.

USD/JPY was up 0.13% to 122.94, while EUR/JPY rose 0.23% to 137.36.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.06% at 95.90.
