TOKYO: Japanese stocks took a negative start on Tuesday, Nikkei Stock Average dropped 2% and the Topix went down 1.8%.
While further losses for the yen have provided only a marginal boost to Japanese exporter shares in recent sessions, an overnight move in the other direction — with the dollar USDJPY, -0.66% dropping to ¥119.46 from ¥120.33 at the previous Tokyo close — appeared to hit currency-sensitive stocks hard, though how much of the retreat was due to other factors was difficult to discern. Among the heavy decliners, Toshiba Corp. 6502, -3.57% TOSYY, +0.87% fell 2.7%, Nintendo Co. 7974, -4.18% NTDOF, -1.28% lost 3%, Konica Minolta Inc. 7731, -2.23% KNCAY, -2.04% gave up 2.3%, and Alps Electric Co. 6770, -3.54% APELF, +0.00% dropped 3.7%. Auto makers also suffered, despite many of them posting solid December U.S. sales results overnight, with Toyota Motor Corp. 7203, -2.76% TM, -1.83% down 1.7%, Nissan Motor Co. 7201, -4.44% NSANY, -1.86% down 2.9%, and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. 7270, -2.68% FUJHF, +1.94% down 2.3%. Meanwhile, a plunge in oil prices in U.S. and European trade slapped Inpex Corp. 1605, -5.80% IPXHY, -3.12% down 4.3%, while Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. 1662, -4.79% JPTXF, -21.98% lost 2.8%, and JX Holdings Inc. 5020, -2.78% JXHGF, -7.44% fell 2.1%. On the other hand, the prospect of cheaper fuel allowed Skymark Airlines Inc. 9204, +1.28% to zoom 4.9% higher, while Japan Airlines Co. 9201, +0.00% JAPSY, +3.28% held losses to just 0.2%. Also outperforming the market were Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. 9432, -0.26% NTT, -1.83% and its wireless affiliate NTT DoCoMo Inc. 9437, -1.11% DCM, -1.43% — down 0.3% and 0.8%, respectively. Earlier reports said DoCoMo has requested arbitration in a dispute with India’s Tata Group over DoCoMo’s efforts to sell a stake in a Tata telecom unit.
