NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru Port has rolled out its logistics data bank (LDB) services with effect from July 1, a move that will help track containers using RFID technology, the Minister of State for Shipping P Radhakrishnan informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

With a view to introducing transparency in container operation, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) has signed an agreement with Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation. The Commercial Operation of Logistics Data Bank Project has been operationalised at JNPT on a pilot basis.

The logistics data bank service will bring efficiency in the current logistics and supply chain environment through use of information technology that will be helpful for tracking and viewing the movement of containers across the port to the ICD and end users.

Each container is tagged with RFID tag and the same can be tracked through different readers installed at different locations. This will provide visibility and transparency on container movement. This will also help in reducing overall lead time of the container movement across the western corridor and lower the transaction cost incurred by the shippers and consignees.
