TALLAHASSEE: Jacksonville’s port is ranked in the top 10 fastest growing U.S. exporting ports.
The Journal of Commerce listed JaxPort as the eighth fastest growing port when it comes to shipping goods out of the country.
JaxPort joins three other Florida ports on that list of nautical hubs that are seeing increased exports.
Miami and Palm Peach are tied for third and Port Everglades came in seventh, according to the commerce publication that posted its rankings Thursday.
University of North Florida economist Paul Mason said he’s not surprised at JaxPort’s ranking.
“I think it is indicative of a trend,” Mason said Thursday. “The Jacksonville port has been gaining in business and notoriety as a source particularly because of the importing and exporting of automobiles that go through.
“Also, we’re a good location as far as land transportation. We’re at the intersection of [interstates] 95 and 10 and we’re the port closest to Orlando. …” Mason said. “The importers and exporters are looking at Jacksonville more extensively.”
Mason previously has been involved in analyzing JaxPort. JaxPort CEO Brian Taylor hired him in 2013 to analyze potential jobs-related data associated with the port.
The top port with exports being shipped from the U.S. was New Orleans, La., according to the list.
While JaxPort made the top 10 list for exports, it was still outdone by one of its main competitors, Charleston, S.C., which was ranked second.
In a separate list for ports serving as hubs for imports, Savannah, Ga., ranked first with Jacksonville not making the top 10 in that ranking and only one Florida port, Miami, on that list. Savannah is another port considered a major Jacksonville competitor.
Douglas Johansen, associate professor and chairman of the Jacksonville University Department of Marketing and International Business, said Jacksonville’s rank on the export list is important. But the rise of growth at ports considered major competitors also represents a significant call to action for Jacksonville.
