JOHOR BARU: The Customs Department has busted two syndicates suspected of smuggling contraband cigarettes into the country.
Johor Customs Department director Datuk Ramli Johari (pic) said on Tuesday that both cases involved almost 22 million sticks of cigarette worth RM13.55mil including unpaid duties.
He said in the first case on Oct 19, the Customs enforcement officers had inspected a forty-footer container at around 4pm at Johor Port in Pasir Gudang.
Ramli said that initial investigations showed that the shipping agent had falsely declared the container’s contents.
He said this in a press conference at the State Customs headquarters here on Tuesday on smuggled contraband cigarette cases the department had busted in the first 10 months of the year.
