NEW DELHI: First presented in a crowdfunding campaign in 2014, the Jolla tablet is now available for pre-order, with first deliveries scheduled for October.

Finnish startup Jolla was founded by former Nokia employees who decided to develop devices that would use an operating system, Sailfish 2.0, based on the abandoned MeeGo project. In addition to all the apps created specifically for this operating system, most Android apps should be compatible as well.

This tablet project got its financing in 2014 via Indiegogo, through which it amassed around $2.5 million. A few months later it even won the award for best tablet at the 2015 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

While the tablet’s unique operating system is obviously the primary selling point, the rest of the specs are pretty decent too. The Jolla tablet has a 7.85-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2048×1536, is powered by a 64-bit Intel Atom processor with 2GB of RAM and has a 5MP rear camera capable of filming in full HD (1080P), a 2MP front facing camera and a 4450 mAh battery. It comes with either 32GB or 64GB of storage and has a micro SD slot for backup.

The tablet is now available for pre-order by those who didn’t pledge to the fundraising campaign, and deliveries of the Jolla tablet should start in September in all EU countries, Norway, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Australia, India, Hong Kong and Russia. Pricing will vary depending on the market, though Jolla says the 32GB model will set customers back €267 (around $300), with the 64GB version priced at €299 (around $336). Pricewise, the Jolla tablet thus falls between Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX 7″ and Apple’s iPad Mini 3.

Jolla has previously released a smartphone, also using Sailfish 2.0, which is available in certain Asian and Eastern European countries.
