Jordan, Japan sign $4.5m grant agreement

AMMON: Jordan and Japan on Wednesday, signed a $4.5 million grant agreement under which Japan will provide advanced security equipment to five border posts in the Kingdom. The agreement was signed by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury and the Japanese Ambassador to Jordan Shuichi Sakurai.

In a press statement following the signing ceremony, Fakhoury highlighted the importance of these equipment in providing security protection to the Kingdom’s borders, noting that the aid comes to enable the Kingdom to address the increasing challenges resulting from the current political situation in the region.

The grant he added, comes within the Royal visit to Tokyo in November 2016 during which Japan offered A $8.8 million grant to Jordan. The minister voiced Jordan’s thanks and appreciation of the continued support provided by Japan to the Kingdom, as well as Japan’s understanding of the economic and social challenges facing Jordan.

“Jordan attaches great importance to its relations with Japan, and seeks to develop these relations in the political, social and economic fields,” he added.

The Japanese ambassador praised efforts exerted by the Kingdom to host refugees as well as His Majesty King Abdullah’s role to bring about peace and prosperity in the region.

He also highlighted the strong ties between the two countries as well as Japan’s keenness to continue its support to Jordan.
