Relations between Israel and Jordan are strained following recent tensions over the Temple Mount. On July 14 three Israeli Arab terrorists murdered two Druze police officers on the Temple Mount, Following the attack Israel installed metal detectors at the entrances to the compound to prevent the smuggling of weapons into the holy site.

The Waqf refused to cooperate with the security measures and ordered all Muslims to avoid the Temple Mount as long as the measures were in place.

Abdullah also called on Israel to remove the metal detectors. The security measures were removed following negotiations between Abdullah and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.
