WASHINGTON: Jurong Port Pte has announced the successful completion of the installation of a 9.5 MegaWatt-peak (MWp) solar energy generation facility, which was undertaken in collaboration with Sunseap Leasing Pte Ltd.

The solar facility commenced provision of electricity earlier this week and will power operations in the port. With the completion of this project, Jurong Port will become the largest port-based solar energy generation facility in the world.

This facility will allow Jurong Port to offset more than 60% of its electricity requirement with an estimated annual generation capability of more than 12 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of solar energy. Excess energy generated will be exported and contribute to the steady supply of renewable energy to the national grid.  This initiative is testament to Jurong Port’s dedication as a leader in environmental sustainability in the transportation and logistics industry.

Jurong Port will be able to reduce 5,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually with the power generated from this facility; with the electricity produced being the equivalent to the consumption of 2,500 units of 4-room apartment flats annually. Mr Ooi Boon Hoe, CEO of Jurong Port, said: “I am delighted that Jurong Port and Sunseap have successfully collaborated to bring this project to fruition. We will continue in our green efforts and look for other opportunities to enhance our sustainability efforts.”

Mr Frank Phuan, Director of Sunseap said: “It was our first time working on a project of this scale locally and we were faced with the challenge of large-scale coordination, including logistics and manpower deployment. “Hours of meticulous planning were dedicated to ensure that the project goes smoothly. Overall, it was a good learning experience for us and the support shown by Jurong Port made this project a less difficult task to complete.”
