Karachi Enforcement torches seized contraband items worth Rs3.9b

KARACHI: Collectorate of Customs Enforcement has destroyed nearly Rs. 3.9 billion worth of confiscated contraband goods in a joint operation, underscoring its resolve to curb smuggling and protect public health.

The destruction ceremony was organized by the Collectorate of Customs (Enforcement), Karachi in collaboration with the Collectorate of Customs (Airports), Karachi, under the powers of the Customs Act, 1969.

The event took place at Plot No. 243, Deh Narathar, Gadap Town, Karachi, under strict supervision to ensure transparency, compliance, and environmental safeguards.

Collector Customs Enforcment Moin ud Din Ahmad Wani, was the chief guest, while Ms. Sadia Shiraz, Collector of Customs (Airports), Karachi, attended alongside dignitaries from Sindh Rangers, FIA, and Sindh Police.

The seized goods had been lawfully confiscated at Jinnah International Airport and other enforcement points, processed through legal forums, and deposited in state warehouses before being destroyed.

Items included over 620,000 kilograms of betel nuts, 74,000 kilograms of gutka, more than 160,000 sticks of cigarettes and cigars, 73,000 kilograms of Ajinomoto salt, nearly 23,000 bottles of liquor and beer, narcotics including charas and heroin powder, as well as expired medicines, tobacco products, sheesha sets, contraband toys, and other prohibited goods.

The approximate market value of the destroyed goods from the Collectorate of Customs Enforcement was assessed at Rs. 3.6 billion, while contraband seized by the Collectorate of Customs (Airports) amounted to Rs. 320.586 million.

Officials emphasized that these items are banned under the Import Policy Order, 2022 due to their harmful effects on public health, safety, and state revenue.
