KARACHI: The All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association has announced a strike call for Tuesday, with markets in Karachi expected to remain closed in protest against actions by tax authorities.

According to a statement issued by the association’s leadership, all major gold and jewellery markets in the city will observe a complete shutdown as part of the protest.

President of the association, Qasim Shikarpuri, said the strike has been called in response to what traders describe as “unlawful raids” by officials of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). He added that jewellers will also stage a peaceful demonstration at Zainab Market at 2pm.

He further claimed that traders are already submitting tax returns more diligently than before, but despite this, FBR officials are allegedly demanding additional payments worth millions of rupees even after reviewing tax records.

“We are protesting against excessive pressure and unjust demands. Our members are fully compliant and regularly filing tax returns,” he said.

Shikarpuri also stated that communication with the FBR chairman is ongoing in an effort to resolve the matter through dialogue.

The announcement is expected to disrupt gold and jewellery trading activity in Karachi on Tuesday, as market stakeholders prepare for the shutdown and protest.
