KARACHI: The Large Taxpayers Office (LTO) Karachi has taken decisive action by sealing an outlet of Zelbury, a well-known online fashion shopping platform, for issuing unverified sales tax invoices.

This enforcement move is part of an ongoing crackdown on tax non-compliance.

According to officials, the action was carried out by Zone-1 under the directives of the Chief Commissioner Inland Revenue of LTO Karachi. The targeted Zelbury outlet, located at KDA Market, Block-3, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, was found to be in violation of tax regulations.

Sources within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) explained that under the Sales Tax Act, 1990, and the Sales Tax Rules, 2006, all Tier-1 retailers are legally required to issue sales tax invoices through a Point of Sale (POS) Integrated System. This requirement ensures transparency and proper documentation of taxable sales.

During a routine monitoring exercise, LTO Karachi identified the issuance of unverified invoices at the Zelbury outlet. Officials confirmed that they had obtained multiple unverified invoices as evidence of non-compliance. The issuance of such invoices contradicts tax laws and undermines revenue collection efforts.

Following the discovery, LTO Karachi invoked the relevant provisions of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, to initiate legal proceedings. The outlet will remain sealed until further orders, pending a thorough review of its compliance status.

LTO Karachi serves as the largest revenue collection unit within the FBR, overseeing major corporations with significant turnover. Its enforcement actions underscore the government’s commitment to combating tax evasion and ensuring compliance across the retail sector.Duty-free shopping

The FBR has launched an extensive crackdown on retailers violating POS regulations to prevent tax leakages. In recent weeks, several tax offices have taken similar measures, urging Tier-1 retailers to adhere strictly to tax laws.

This latest enforcement by LTO Karachi sends a strong message to large taxpayers, emphasizing that failure to comply with sales tax regulations will result in strict legal consequences. Business entities are advised to align with tax requirements to avoid facing similar punitive actions.
