KARACHI: The University of Karachi’s (UoK) International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) has built and installed an environment-friendly air-conditioning plant of 200 tons with at the institution, having zero electricity cost.
ICCBS-UoK Director Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry expressed these views while speaking at an official meeting at HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, UoK.
He said that the power requirement and its generation were considered as one of the most serious issue of recent time. He maintained that the electricity requirements of the developing countries, especially in Pakistan, were rising noticeably, whereas the infra-structure of power generation was not improving accordingly.
He said that ICCBS had set up this system just to keep the highly sophisticated research equipments save from the dire consequences of power failure or load shedding. The ICCBS is regarded as one of the finest research establishments of the developing world.
The plant consists of a heat recovery system, which produces hot water through jacket water and exhaust gases heat exchangers, he said and added that this hot water was used for producing chilled water, which is enough for complete air conditioning (200 Tons) of a large research building of Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD).
